5 Reasons Why Massage Therapy Is an Important Part of Your Fitness Regime
Massage therapy is a type of treatment to relax and reduce the tension that builds up in your body. But did you know that massage therapy can also help prevent injuries, improve your flexibility, endurance and exercise performance? Our Massage Therapist explains 5 reasons why massage therapy should be an integral part of your fitness regime.
1. It Can Alleviate Pain and Injury
Whether you’re a walker, runner, gym goer, or always on the go, being on your feet constantly can lead to wear and tear on your muscles and tendons. Massage therapy can help relieve the soreness that builds up over time as a result of regular exercise or activity by applying specific, pressurised massage techniques that help release tension, alleviate pain and reduce the risk of muscle or tendon injury.
2. It Can Increase Joint Mobility
Joint mobility, or range of motion, is an important component in proper exercise technique, form and longevity. When joints become stiff and muscles become tight, your range of motion is reduced and may be limited by pain. Joint mobilisation moves the joints to loosen and restore your correct range of movement.
Massage therapy can increase your joint mobility by bringing your joints slowly through a small range of motion (think small circles of the knee) which increases the temperature of the surrounding soft tissues, increases elasticity, reducing swelling and breaking down the waste products from the muscles. This is particularly useful when the muscles are tight from exercise or when recovering from an injury.
3. It Can Improve Blood Circulation and Reduce Muscle Stiffness
If you’ve ever been sore two days after exercise such as leg day, then you’ve experienced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). As the name suggests, DOMS is a delayed onset of pain or stiffness from exercise, it most commonly occurs in those who are new to exercise or those who have recently ramped up their exercise intensity.
While a very normal part of the muscle growth process, DOMS can make any body movement uncomfortable for the following few days. The good news is, sports massage therapy can increase blood circulation to the muscles and aid in reducing the stiffness in your body.
4. It Can Reduce Stress and Heighten Mental Alertness
Regular massage treatment can aid in calming the nervous system, support your immune system and enhance your overall wellbeing. Long, soft kneading on your muscles that become tight with daily stressors can relieve the tension and stimulate your nervous system, leaving you both relaxed and more mentally sharp.
5. It Aids in Corrective Posture
Poor posture generally occurs for one of two reasons; hunched, rounded shoulders or a tilting of the hips that curves the spine. Massage therapy can effectively improve poor posture and ease its associated symptoms by massaging muscles that have been overworked and using specific postural realignment techniques. This leads to more relaxed muscles, relief from pain or tension, an increased range of joint motion and can reduce tension headaches.
